Does OpenMC source convergence works with loosely coupled fissile systems? , like in fuel reprocessing plants and fuel storage geometries?
In principle, yes, it works the same just as in any other Monte Carlo neutron transport code. These types of systems are more prone to problems, in particular undersampling. You may need to use many particles per generation in order to get the source to actually converge and not just oscillate between the loosely-coupled regions. You also need to be careful when looking at Shannon entropy because there are many papers in the literature demonstrating that as a single metric, it can become unreliable for these types of systems. So, the moral of the story is – yes, it can work, but be very careful.
