Germanium detector OpenMC vs. MCNP5

Dear All,

I am currently working on simulating a Germanium detector in OpenMC for calibration purposes. Initially, I found the example provided by Christopher Fichtlscherer very helpful (link: Gamma Detector Notebook).

In addition, I have modeled the geometry using MCNP5. However, I am encountering an issue with OpenMC. When I place the point source just above the detector window at coordinates (0, 0, 8.06), the pulse height tally does not record the photon peak at the specified energy (0.5 MeV in this case). In contrast, MCNP5 produces the expected result, as shown in the attached plot.

I should mention that this is not the first time I have observed such discrepancies with OpenMC. In other cases, OpenMC has also failed to accurately score energy deposition. I am hopeful that someone can assist me in resolving this issue with OpenMC.

It is worth noting that when the source is moved inside the crystal, OpenMC does produce a photon peak. However, as those familiar with detector calibration know, the source is typically placed several millimeters away from the inner detector window.

Attached, please find the simulation results from both MCNP5 (gev5) and OpenMC, along with the corresponding simulation files.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

Al-Ghamdi
