looking at the file “input_XML.F90” it seems that in the specification of an external source the element type can also take the option “tabular”. Is this a working option? If so, how should be used?

It is not a working option. I had stubbed that in there a long time ago but never got around to implementing it. If it is something you are interested in, I can put an issue on github so that it is tracked.
