uncertainity level in calculation of flux using mesh tally

Hi everyone,

1----how do i know that values of flux obtained by using mesh tally are accurate?
2----how much smaller should the values of standard deviation “+/-” from the values of flux being calculated?
3----for a rough estimate generally how many batches and number of particles should be used for an accurate calculation?

Best regards,

Hi Amna,

Regarding questions 1 and 2, I’d advise looking at the MCNP primer which has some discussion on the subject (see section 5.3). However, the requirements are really dictated by whatever the particular application is. Sometimes a rough estimate might be good enough; other times you may need an answer that is extremely precise. No one can really tell you how good of an answer you need–that is something you’ll have to answer for yourself.

For question three, there is no easy answer–it depends on the tally definition, how many particles are contributing to the tally, and what level of error you deem to be acceptable. If you know your desired level of error, OpenMC does allow you to use “tally triggers” that will automatically stop the simulation once a user-defined absolute or relative error has been reached for a particular tally.
